Google Named DeepMind's Next Leader SVP, Not CEO
On August 5, 2026, Google said Demis Hassabis will become Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. The announcement named no new DeepMind CEO, and never named Discovery Loop.

The post at blog.google, titled The next chapter of our AI momentum, carries two letters to employees, one from Sundar Pichai and one from Demis Hassabis. Across the body, Discovery Loop occurs zero times. The name reached the public through Jeff Dean’s own account, six minutes after the blog post went live.
Google DeepMind’s personnel moves had already drawn coverage in late July, which this site examined in The Counter Was Still Running.
The letter hands day-to-day GDM leadership to an SVP
Pichai’s wording on Hassabis is a single clause: “Demis will become the Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet,” while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. Chair, not chairman, and Chairman occurs zero times in the letters.
Hassabis gives his own reason, writing that the moment was right to “hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM,” freeing time and space for the big picture.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, GDM’s chief technology officer and Google’s Chief AI Architect, “will step up as SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting to me.” His remit covers Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams.
SVP is not CEO.
In the body of the announcement, CEO refers only to Pichai. No sentence says Hassabis is stepping down as chief executive, and no sentence appoints a new one at Google DeepMind. What the announcement fixes is the reporting line, and the fate of the title goes unaddressed.
As of August 11, two Google pages display different titles. The byline on the blog post already reads Chair, Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist, Alphabet, while the About page at deepmind.google, on the same date, still signs its pull quote Co-founder and CEO, Google DeepMind, and still describes the merged Brain and DeepMind team as one led by Hassabis as CEO.
Questions left open by the announcement
effective occurs zero times in the announcement, and so do leaving, depart, resign, last day and step down. The announcement gives Dean no last day at Google, the only fixed date is the announcement itself on August 5, 2026, and who picks up his responsibilities, or whether the role stays, goes unaddressed.

Google’s August 5, 2026 announcement does not say that he is, and does not say that he is not. It says Hassabis will become Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs, and that Koray Kavukcuoglu will step up as SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting to Sundar Pichai. No sentence in the announcement retires the CEO title or appoints a new holder of it. Did Jeff Dean leave Google?
Google’s announcement never uses leaving, depart, resign, last day or step down, and gives no final date, so this announcement does not establish whether or when he stops being a Google employee. What Pichai’s letter says is that Dean wants to try something new after a tenure it puts at 27 years, and that Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are launching an independent public benefit corporation. Dean confirmed the company, Discovery Loop, on his own verified account the same day.
